Basehor-Linwood USD 458 is currently accepting applications for a Spanish teacher, for grades 9-12, for the 2023-2024 school year.  
 

Purpose:

The main role of the Spanish Teacher is to develop student proficiency in the target language through meaningful and engaging activities accessible to all students.  By providing quality instruction reflective of current best practices, students will demonstrate growth in interpersonal, interpretive and interpersonal skills and will develop intercultural awareness and appreciation as globally-minded citizens.

 

Education/Experience Requirements:

A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in education and a teaching license. They must be literate and fluent in Spanish - Advanced Low proficiency or above. In addition, any candidate that possesses a master's degree could have the opportunity to teach dual enrollment courses. 

 

Skills:

Effective written and verbal communication skills, excellent teaching skills, interpersonal relations skills, time management and organizational skills, administrative skills, problem-solving skills, research skills, and extensive knowledge of various teaching materials. He/she must also be compassionate, patient, observant, detail-oriented, creative and think outside the box.

 

Specific work elements:

  • Understands and pursues the use of best practices and key concepts within world-language instruction including comprehensible input, language acquisition vs. language learning, task-based communicative activities, TL use in class instruction, the 5 C's, and ACTFL's Proficiency Guidelines and descriptors.
  • Encourages students to listen actively, speak often, and take risks while acquiring the language.
  • Embraces the idea that errors are an expected part of acquiring language and builds in opportunities for feedback, reflection, and goal setting while explicitly modeling a growth mindset.  
  • Utilizes relationships and social-emotional strategies to address student fears and obstacles in language learning.
  • Exposes students to a diverse set of perspectives and practices from the target culture and beyond.
  • Values the role of goal-setting, feedback, and reflection in language acquisition and implements these strategies to encourage resilience and student ownership of learning.
  • Leverages authentic resources, technology, organizations, and programs to connect students to Spanish-speaking communities locally, nationally, and globally, and to provide real-world contexts to practice their language skills.
