Basehor-Linwood USD 458 is currently seeking an Elementary Counselor for grades K-5 at Gray Hawk Elementary School for the 2025-2026 school year.
POSITION: Elementary School Counselor K-5
DESCRIPTION: As a member of the counseling department, our elementary counselors provide a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades K-5. Provide activities to meet the needs of assigned case-loads; consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students and provide support to other elementary educational programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment.
- Provide individual counseling and group instruction to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
- Implement a comprehensive appraisal process by:
- selecting and administering appropriate ability, achievement, and interests tests
- visiting with students and interview interested adults, and
- interpreting results to students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
- Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
- Work effectively with community organizations.
- React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
- Support the value of education.
- Support the mission and vision of U.S.D. #458.
- Update and maintain confidential student records.
- Assist in a continuous program of student orientation.
- Assist in making recommendations for school curriculum and instructional practices.
- Assist with the activities of student organizations.
- See that district policies are observed during all activities.
- Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
- Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in counseling education
- Currently hold or be eligible for a Kansas certificate (counseling)
- Two years accredited teaching in the elementary school setting
- Demonstrated knowledge of methods of effective instruction
- Desire and ability to work with students and staff
- A willingness to cooperate with and follow the directions of the school principal
- The ability and willingness to communicate with parents
- Knowledge of effective methods of behavior modifications with students
- Ability to plan, organize, and see that activities are completed
- Proficient in data collection and reporting
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Proficient in Microsoft and Google applications
Physical Requirements: Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in the work environment. Regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job is required.
- Must have physical stamina to maintain job responsibilities.
